What It Does
The tank separates solids from liquid. The leach field does the treatment. Effluent leaves the tank, distributes through the field, and percolates down through unsaturated soil where bacteria break down remaining contaminants before the water reaches groundwater.
That process needs soil depth and soil that actually drains. Where either is missing, a conventional field can’t do the job.
Ohio’s Three Constraints
Heavy clay is the dominant issue across much of northeast and central Ohio. Clay drains slowly, so effluent backs up rather than percolating, and the field saturates. Lots on heavy clay often need mound systems or engineered designs.
Shallow bedrock defines much of southeast and Appalachian Ohio. Too little soil between the field and the rock means inadequate treatment, and water reaching fractured bedrock can travel a long way with minimal filtration.
Seasonal high water table saturates soil for part of the year. A field that performs in August may sit in saturated ground in April, which means it isn’t treating effluent when the water table is up.

When None of Them Can Be Solved
This is where Ohio differs from most states in the portfolio. Where sewers aren’t available and on-site dispersal genuinely isn’t possible, Ohio permits systems that discharge off lot after treatment — to a ditch, field tile or stream.
Ohio EPA has granted coverage to over 20,000 such residences since 2006. It’s a real and reasonably common solution, concentrated in areas where soil and geology leave few options.

What Your Health District Charges
Ohio has 88 local health districts and each one sets its own septic fees — there is no state schedule. Six publish figures we could read, and they are reproduced here in full. These are the district’s fees only: the designer, the installer and the excavation are separate, and much larger.

Protecting What You Have
The replacement area matters as much as the field itself. Ohio counties evaluate sites with a replacement area in mind, and building over it — with a shed, garage, pool or driveway — can leave you with nowhere to go when the original field fails.
Some counties require review before adding those structures for exactly this reason. Worth asking before you build rather than after.
Signs Yours Is Struggling
Soggy ground or standing water over the field, sewage odor outdoors, unusually lush grass over the field, and slow drains throughout the house.
Ohio’s seasonal complication: spring thaw and wet weather saturate ground statewide. The test is comparison and persistence — is the field area wetter than the rest of the yard, and does it stay wet noticeably longer? Wet ground plus odor isn’t weather.
